Team coaching helps a group of individuals better understand how to draw the best from each other and leverage the collective power of the group to achieve far greater results than can be achieved individually.
It’s not to be confused with traditional ‘team building’ days (which often involve outdoor activities, building structures out of newspaper and the like) although these have their place and can be tremendous fun.
Team coaching is focused on fundamentally changing how the individuals within the team work together. It’s achieved through challenging and courageous dialogue, a heightened awareness of one another’s motivations and an enhanced understanding of how the team perceives one another.
Based on his experience of working with teams across different sectors all over the world, Charlie typically starts by conducting a team ‘health check’ exploring what he believes are the four fundamental qualities of high performing teams:
- Are the members of the team open and honest with one another?
- Can and do they challenge one another?
- Do they regularly give each other constructive feedback?
- As a team, do they have one, clear purpose?
By exploring these topics and surfacing any barriers that exist, Charlie raises the social awareness of the team (a better understanding of why each member behaves in the way they do) and builds both commonality of purpose and, most importantly, greater trust.
At this point the team is then in far better shape to consider its strategic and leadership objectives and Charlie will work with the group to challenge their clarity of thinking, their motivation and ultimately their commitment to action.
